Keep a weather eye open

What does "Keep a weather eye open" mean?

Today it means: Keep a good watch, be alert, be on your guard.

Onboard ship, the "weather" side is where the wind and rain comes from and it was always quite difficult to look in that direction. Because of this it was less likely to be properly observed and obstacles and other ships could be missed. It was very important therefore to "keep a weather eye open" to look for danger.

Any change in the weather is likely to come from the "weather" side of the ship and so the captain would want to know so as to order more sail as soon as it arrives.
