What does "Estimated position (EP)" mean?

Today it means: A specific form of navigation at sea.

An estimated position is gained by knowing the start point, course steered, speed, estimated leeway and the effects of the tide. The correct position mark on a chart an estimated position, EP, is a small triangle with a dot in it.
