Today it means: The bottom of the sea.

Myth has it that "Davy Jones Locker" is the final resting place of ships that sink, items thrown overboard and sailors who drown. It's thought to be a corruption of Duffy Jonah. Duffy being an African word for ghost and Jonah the luckless biblical character.
