Chart datum

What does "Chart datum" mean?

Today it means: The lowest level at tide is likely to fall.

Navigational charts show the depth of water at the lowest predictable tide (lowest astronomical tide (LAT)). When calculating how much water depth there will be in any particular location one needs to add the height of tide to the chart datum. Charts will also show rocks and land which is above chart datum as a minus number so that, when you know the height of tide you must subtract that number to show the depth of water available.
