What does "Broadcast" mean?

Today it means: Throw something widely, in no general direction.

To cast is to throw something in a particular direction like an angler would cast his line to where he hopes the fish are. A "broadcast" is to throw something in no particular direction. Now, it means a radio transmission which casts it's message in all directions.
